STUDIED STREET FIGHTER
Paris:  For S/S 13 inspiration, Phillip Lim looked to the practice of Mixed Martial Arts, a sparring technique combining elements of Japanese karate with Brazilian street fighting. The result was a collection achieving restrained simplicity and tough swagger all at once. The clothes took influence from authentic practice garments; crisp white cotton jackets and pants resembled karate uniforms, while baggy track pants and boxing shorts had an urban edge. The slouchy looks were elevated with a luxury take on classic activewear materials — fine mesh knits, perforated leathers, and bonded jerseys. Punctuating the Zen-like effect a white-heavy palette and clean layers, was a bit of flamboyance in the form of baroque floral prints and filigree embroidery. Leather shower sandals worn with socks (this season’s breakthrough trend) gave things a post-match feel. —Anna Jane Davis
