Top 10 celebs that have influenced fashion

In a celebrity-obsessed world, it's no surprise that we all want to copy what famous faces (and bodies) are wearing. Fashion websites, celeb magazines and celebrity fashion lines have all played their part in keeping star style firmly on the map in the last decade.

  • Carrie Bradshaw

Otherwise known as actress Sarah Jessica Parker, Sex and the City's Carrie was a designer label-led fashion icon. Thanks to stylist Patricia Field, she helped make Manolo Blahnik a household name. The launch of Sex and the City: The Movie in 2008 brought it all back – over-styling, designer name-dropping and product placement galore.

  • Kate Moss

The supermodel is one of the greatest fashion influencers of all time because she's such an original. She popularised the skinny jean globally, and led the way with waistcoats, hotpants and festival chic. Her success lies in her high street appeal, mixing labels together to create an attainable yet effortless look that screams unkempt rock chick cool. Like so many of the other celebs listed here, she too has her own line (for Topshop).

  • Jennifer Lopez

As famous for her Latina curves as for her film and music career, Lopez has carried off every copyable look conceivable, from hippy-deluxe to glam sports, as well as being the queen of "bling". Her red carpet favourites are Versace, Valentino and Cavalli. She also has three of her own successful fashion lines, perfumes that sell like hot-cakes, and her own abbreviation: J.Lo.

  • Kanye West

A fashion show front row regular since bursting onto the music scene in 2004, he calls himself the "Louis Vuitton Don" and has spawned an army of mini-Kanyes. Signature looks have ranged from backpack-wearing college boy, to ghetto Gatsby, through 1980s Miami Vice-style, hipster-hop (a nu rave take on hip hop with ridiculous shutter shades); and finally, a serious bow-tied, bespectacled and suited fashion commentator.

  • Maggie Cheung

This Hong Kong-born actress brought Chinese style to the West with the qi pao (or cheongsam) dresses she wore for In The Mood For Love, and western style to China with her off-duty and red carpet style. Inspired by Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn, she personifies modern day luxury in a simplified and less opulent way than was seen in China a decade ago.

  • Ayumi Hamasaki

Japan's most famous popstar and the face of Harajuku style, she's worn everything from "kawaii" (cute) to new goth looks to influence an entire generation. When she changes her style, so does every other girl in Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea and South East Asia. She even has her own Hello Kitty range.

  • Carine Roitfeld

Consumers rushed to copy her look this decade – even if they didn't know it was hers! Ex-model, stylist and now editor of French Vogue, Roitfeld has influenced fashion both through her pages and her personal style. Industry insiders (including the most influential buyers) love her, Barneys and Bloomingdale's have dedicated window displays to her, and 2002's runways and ads featured Roitfeld clones as her dark, edgy look became the style to copy.

  • Brand Beckham

He brought the concept of "metrosexual" to the masses with his groomed appearance. From sarongs to cardigans, he feminised the male wardrobe, while his changing hairstyles got people going Beckham-crazy around the globe. She was ending her reign as Posh Spice a decade ago, but has gone on to be more famous as footballer's wife-in-chief. She even has her own successful clothing line - DVB by Victoria Beckham.

  • Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake

This one-time princess of pop was once the biggest influence on teen and tween fashion - from tiny crop tops to shorter skirts and socks pulled up above the knee. Her former prince also made an impact on young men, initially with classic boy band styling. But as she declined, he only got better. His designer stubble, pork pie hats, waistcoats, old school trainers and bashed up leather jackets sum up mainstream casual style, and can be seen in his own lifestyle brand William Rast.

She even has her own reality show: The Rachel Zoe Project. Vintage dressing on a size 00 frame is key, with maxidresses, tousled sun-kissed hair, an all-over tan, oversized sunglasses and even bigger It bags.
